About Hardened Linux

Hardened Linux is a completely free and heavily secured Linux based operating system. The system includes both, hardened userspace programms and a hardened kernel. The kernel includes the GRSecurity kernel patch including the PaX patch. Userspace (network) services are hardened by default and compiled with gcc stack smashing protection and to work with PaX.

History

Hardened Linux is based on Wendzel-Linux 1.1.0 (an internal development version). Wendzel-Linux was created by Steffen Wendzel in Sep/Oct/Nov-2006 and is based on the Slackware Linux versions 11.0 and 10.2. There was only one real available snapshot release of Wendzel-Linux (version 1.0.3 on Oct-04-2006).

The primary base for Hardened Linux is still Slackware-Linux.

In Nov/Dec-2006 more developers joined the Hardened Linux project what let it became an international Open Source project.

Versions

Version history

You maybe ask yourself why we didn't ever released a 1.0 stable version instead a 2.0 version. The answer is quite easy: We used the Wendzel-Linux version history (latest Wendzel-Linux version was 1.1.0 and the first HL snapshot version was 1.5.0).
